Herbert SPILLER

Private 301203, Canadian Expeditionary Force (Canadian Field Artillery shown in newspaper cutting)

Was originally resident at 48 Commercial Street, Nelson but emigrated to Canada in abt 1907. He was born on 25th December 1894 according to his C.E.F. papers, but Glamorgan records show his birth was registered in 1892. On his 1915 Canadian attestation papers he listed his next of kin as one Fanny Lowe, though on the same sheet, he declares himself as not married. The 1901 Wales census may shed some light on this. Fanny Lowe is shown married to William Lowe and living at 36 Shingrig Road. On the same census report, Herbert and Edwin John (above) are both shown as ‘son’. 1891 Wales Census clarifies that Edwin and Fanny Spiller were living at Machine Houses, Nelson with those children who had been born. Edwin Spiller died in 1893 and Fanny married William Lowe in 1896.
