Son of Thomas Charles and Bessie Vine, of 61, Long Row, Nelson, Cardiff.

Buried at Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece, Grave 1307

Herbert Charles Vine was one of two children born to Thomas Charles and Bessie Vine. Thomas was born in Bridport, Dorset in about 1868. Bessie was born in Symondsbury, Dorset in the same year.

Thomas was a dairyman who worked from their home in Witherstone, Dorset.

They had two children:

Mabel - who was born in 1895
Herbert - who was born in 1896

According to 1901 census reports, both Mabel and Herbert were listed as visitors at the home of William and Emily Brodley in Maiden Newton, Dorset.

Died of wounds.

The sad news reached Nelson on Monday morning that Private Herbert Vine, South Wales Borderers, son of Mr and Mrs Vine, 61 Heol Fawr, Nelson had died in hospital at Salonika from wounds received in action. Private Vine enlisted at Port Talbot in the early stages of the war and had seen service on several fronts. Readers will remember that last year he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery and devotion to duty. This is the first Nelson man to fall in the Balkans and brings the village death roll to 26.
Private Vine was born in South Perrot, Somerset and died on 12/12/1917.
