Born in Tredegar, enlisted at Pontypridd and Lived in Penygraig, Rhondda.
Died of wounds on 28th October 1914 - France & Flanders.
Buried at Ypres Town Cemetery Extension.

Son of Charles and Jane Sadler.
Brother to Jacob, John Rees, Margaret and David Sadler.

Evan Robert Sadler (1911 Census shows the name spelled as Saddler) married in 1907 to a Beatrice Mary Smith. In 1909, they had a son called Albert who died in 1910. A second child, Beatrice M L Sadler was born in 1914, but she died in 1916.

1891 census shows the family were living at 39, West Lane, Tredegar but by the 1901 census, they were in the Rhondda.

Born in Tredegar in 1881, enlisted at Newport, lived in Blackwood.
Died of wounds on 30th April 1916 - France & Flanders.
Buried at Merville Communal Cemetery, France

Son of John and Jane Saunders of Tredegar.
Brother to William, Thomas, Mary Jane, Edward, Sarah and Emma Saunders.
Husband to Alice Jane Saunders (who later married a Mr Price), 113 New Markham Crescent, Oakdale.

1891 census shows the family lived at 18 Himalaya Range (Troedyrhiwgwair).

 

SAVIGAIR, Charles - Private 14666

Born at Ashford Bowdler, Shropshire in 1888, enlisted at Newport, lived in Tredegar.
Killed in action on 8th May 1915 - Gallipoli
Commemorated at Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.

Son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Savigair (Savager on 1891 census).
Brother to Maud and Alice Savigair.

1911 census shows hat Charles was a lodger at 7, Picton Street, Tredegar with Thomas and Hannah Taylor, their daughters and son, Azariah Taylor who was also killed.
Charles was a colliery timberman.

 

SCHOFIELD, Richard - Gunner 19614

Born in Malvern, Worcestershire, enlisted at Tredegar.
Died of wounds on 28th March 1916.
Buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.

Son of Frederick and Emma Schofield, Mayfield Cottage, Malvern.
Brother to Norman, Edith, Thomas, Ernest, Raymond and Rose Schofield.

 

SCOTT, Sidney - military record not yet traced.

Born in Lye, Worcestershir in 1887, the son of Edwin and Mary Ann Scott.
Brother to George, Richard, Mary, Joseph, Ernest, Martha, Thomas, Alice and Beatrice.

In 1911, Sidney was boarding at 27 Buller Terrace, Tredegar.

 

SHAW, Frederick - Private 22274

Born in Malmesbury in 1880, enlisted at Tredegar.
Killed in action on 8th July 1916 - France & Flanders.
Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, France.

Son of Eliza Shaw, brother to William and Catherine Shaw.
Uncle to Lilian and George Shaw.

 

SHERMAN, James - Private 36320

Born in Tredegar in 1873, enlisted in Brecon and lived in Crumlin.
Killed in action on 2nd October 1915 - France & Flanders.
Commemorated at Loos Memorial, France

Son of Henry and Jane Sherman, brother to Mary Sherman.

SNELL, Frederick - Sergeant 1990
3rd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment

Born in Bedwellty in 1885, enlisted in Abergavenny.
Killed in action on 29th December 1915.
Buried at Ferme Olivier Cemetery, Belgium.

Son of John and Mary Snell, 215, 6th Row, Tredegar.
In 1911 Frederick is shown as boarding with Evan and Sarah Gwenlan and their family at 32 High Street, Tredegar.

Frederick was one of a number of soldiers from the 3rd Monmouthshires who on 29th December were parading at Elverdinghe Chateau, Belgium, just before going on some home leave, when a few stray German artillery shells, fired from Houthulst Forest, landed in their midst and killed many outright and also wounded several of the men.
They are buried in communal graves in Ferme Olivier Cemetery. There are a number of Tredegar men appearing in these web pages who were with Frederick, and who are also buried with him.

Husband of Mary Harriet Spilsbury (Foremerly Owen), 54 James Street, Tredegar. They were married in 1914.

Son of James and Jane Stagg, 19, Queen Vistoria Street, Tredegar.
Brother to George Walter, James, Isaac, John, Gwendoline, Joseph and Ann Rose Stagg.

1911 census shows Charles was an enlisted soldier at Bulford Hut Barracks, Devizes, Wiltshire.
He was in the Royal Field Artillery at this time.
Charles’ mother, Jane, was a sister to Charles Woolf whose son was Joseph Woolf, who appears in this site. i.e. Charles Stagg and Joseph Woolf were cousins.

in 1911 the family lived at 52, Montague Place, Shrewsbury.
In 1901 they were living at 27, James Street, Tredegar. Wilfred’s father worked on the railways.

Died on 6th May 1917 - France & Flanders.

Son of Joseph Styles.
Husband of Florence Styles. Father to George J, Violet C and Lilian E M Styles. Lived at 21 Buller Terrace, Tredegar.
George married Florence Nicholas on 3rd June 1906 and in 1901 he was a signaller in the Royal Navy.

Son of Charles Frederick and Maria Summerfield, brother to Frederick, Henry, Edgar and Caroline Summerfield.
In both 1901 and 1911 the family were living at 95, Diana Street, Cardiff.

In 1911 John was living with David and Mary Heley and their five children at 314, 24th Row, Sirhowy.
