Killed in action on 29th December 1915 - France & Flanders.
Buried at Ferme Olivier Cemetery, Belgium.

Son of Joseph and Emma Payne, 10 Cross Street, Blaina.

Albert was one of a number of soldiers from the 3rd Monmouthshires who on 29th December were parading at Elverdinghe Chateau, Belgium, just before going on some home leave, when a few stray German artillery shells, fired from Houthulst Forest, landed in their midst and killed many outright and also wounded several of the men.
They are buried in communal graves in Ferme Olivier Cemetery. There are a number of Tredegar men appearing in these web pages who were with Albert, and who are also buried with him.

In 1915 the family lived at 27, Back of Queen Street, Tredegar.

I am informed by Brinley Powell’s son, Richard, that Mary Jane was one of two daughters born to David and Elizabeth. Both were named Mary Jane, but the first died in infancy.

I have discovered enlistment papers that show that David tried to enlist into the 10th Service Battalion, South Wales Borderers (1st Gwent) early in 1915. His service number was 21453. While undergoing the initial enlistment procedures he was discharged on 20th February 1915. Richard Powell further tells me that later in 1915, David, his brother Walter (below) and a second brother George (now added) enlisted in the Monmouthshire Regiment at Newport.
