News:

Oct 7th 1916.

Killed in action.

Official news has been received that Rifleman Ben Jones, Rifle Brigade, who resides at Whitegate Terrace, Heol Fawr, Nelson was killed in action on 1st September. Mention of the sad occurrence is also made by Private E.J. Davies, K.S.L.I in a letter to his mother Mrs Davies, 71, Heol Fawr, Nelson.
Pte Davies says:

I have rather bad news for you this time, that is, of the death in action of poor old Ben Jones. He was killed by a bursting shell on Friday night, Sept 1st and he was buried in a cemetery not very far behind the firing line. His regiment made a very nice cross and placed it at the head of his grave. I did the grave up myself before we left and put two layers of bricks all around it, making it look very neat and tidy.

Rifleman Jones enlisted in the early stages of the war and had been at the front for a considerable period.
